{"id":3585,"date":"2024-06-14T14:11:50","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T14:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/?p=3585"},"modified":"2024-06-14T14:11:53","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T14:11:53","slug":"house-of-reps-holds-constitution-review-retreat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/house-of-reps-holds-constitution-review-retreat\/","title":{"rendered":"House of Reps Holds Constitution Review Retreat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the Constitution convened in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State on the 24<sup>th<\/sup> and 25<sup>th<\/sup> of May 2024,\u00a0 for its first retreat. It was attended by more than 35 members of the Committee, technical experts, consultants, the secretariat and staff of the Committee. The retreat was organised by Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening\nceremony on the first day of the retreat, which had in attendance, the\nPresident of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio; the Governor of Akwa Ibom\nState, Umo Eno, represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi; the\nChairman of the Conference of Speakers of&nbsp;\nState Houses of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin and&nbsp; members of the Constitution Review Committee.\nAlso in attendance were experts, bureaucrats of the National Assembly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his\nopening remarks, the Chairman of the Committee and Deputy Speaker of the House\nof the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu stated that the\nCommittee had received 305 proposals from Nigerians while 112 Constitution\nAlteration bills sponsored by Members are at different stages of consideration\nin the House of Representatives. He added that the Committee will engage with\ncitizens in all geo-political zones, including a national public hearing in\nAbuja before the end of 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCommittee deliberated on Constitution alteration proposals from previous\nNational Assemblies, and &nbsp;also reviewed\nproposals for Constitution alteration contained in memoranda received from the\npublic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCommittee constituted seven sub-committees to work on the identified issues as\nfollows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Local\nGovernment Matters <\/li><li>Judiciary <\/li><li>Electoral\nMatters <\/li><li>State\nPolicing <\/li><li>Gender\nIssues <\/li><li>Human\nRights <\/li><li>Other\nSpecial Matters <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCommittee reaffirmed its commitment to the timelines that it had set for the\ncompletion of its work and transmission of passed bills to the States for their\nvotes and transmission to the President in the second half of 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the Constitution convened in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State on the 24th and 25th of May 2024,\u00a0 for its first retreat.
