The suspension of the strike is for a 30-day period which according to the labour unions, is to enable the government to implement the agreement that it reached with the unions. According to the agreement reached and contained in a memorandum of understanding between the parties, the government is expected to implement the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Payment of wage award of N35,000 only monthly for all Federal Government workers pending when a new minimum wage is signed into law; <\/li><li>Fast-tracking the provision of Compressed Natural Gas\n(CNG) buses to ease public transportation difficulties; &nbsp;<\/li><li>Provision of tax\nincentive measures for private enterprises; <\/li><li>VAT waiver on diesel for the\nnext 6 months from October 2023; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Commencement payment of N25,000 per month to 15 million households, including vulnerable pensioners, for a three-month period from October-December 2023.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these agreements were predicated on measures announced by\nPresident Tinubu in a broadcast to commemorate Nigeria\u2019s 63<sup>rd<\/sup>\nIndependence Day anniversary, to address the hardship occasioned by the removal\nof petrol subsidy. The Federal Government had convened an emergency meeting on\nOctober 1 to engage the labour unions, to avert the planned strike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Persons present at the meeting include NLC President, Joe Ajaero, TUC\nPresident, Festus Osifo, Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong,\nMinister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiru Onyejeocha, Minister\nof Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and several others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The renewed confrontation between labour unions and the Federal\nGovernment is caused mainly by the current volatile economic situation in the\ncountry, arising from President Tinubu\u2019s inauguration day removal of subsidy on\npetrol and subsequent flotation of the naira exchange rates.
