{"id":2913,"date":"2022-09-30T13:09:29","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T13:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/?p=2913"},"modified":"2022-09-30T13:09:32","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T13:09:32","slug":"plac-event-retreat-for-house-of-representatives-committee-on-electoral-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/plac-event-retreat-for-house-of-representatives-committee-on-electoral-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"PLAC Event: Retreat for House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Saturday, 24<sup>th<\/sup> September 2022, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) in collaboration with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, with support from the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) held a retreat on the National Electoral Offences Commission Bill 2022, in Abuja. The purpose of the retreat was for the Committee to fine-tune the bill, to reflect stakeholders\u2019 input from the public hearing on the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her\nopening remarks, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Aishatu Dukku noted that\nelectoral offences and money politics were major threats to elections in\nNigeria, and as such, the passage of the National Electoral Offences Commission\nBill will serve to enhance the electoral process and disincentivise those who\nseek to circumvent it.&nbsp; Executive\nDirector of PLAC, Clement Nwankwo commended the Committee for its efforts\ntowards electoral reform, especially with regard to the actualisation of the\nElectoral Act 2022 and commitment to the passage of the National Electoral\nOffences Commission Bill. A representative of the UK FCDO, Matthew Ayibakuro\nexpressed the commitment of the FCDO for continued support and partnership with\nthe Committee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCommittee has gone on to present its report on the bill to the House at plenary\nand taking other necessary steps to&nbsp;\nensure its passage. It will be recalled that the Senate has passed its\nversion of the bill.
