{"id":2667,"date":"2022-05-10T15:27:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T15:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/?p=2667"},"modified":"2022-05-10T15:49:35","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T15:49:35","slug":"senate-passes-amendment-to-electoral-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/senate-passes-amendment-to-electoral-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Passes Amendment to Electoral Act"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the Senate and Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, on Tuesday, 10<sup>th<\/sup> May, introduced a new bill to amend section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022. The bill seeks specifically to amend section 84(8) of the Act. It provides as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>A political party that adopts the system of<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>indirect primaries for the choice of its candidate<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>shall clearly outline in its constitution and rules the<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>procedure for the democratic election of delegates<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>to vote at the convention, congress or meeting, i<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>n <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>addition to delegates already prescribed in the<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>constitution of the party<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the explanatory\nmemorandum to the bill, it seeks to amend the Electoral\nAct 2022 to make provision for delegates who, not being elected delegates, as\nprescribed in the constitution of a political party to be allowed to\nparticipate in the convention, congress or meeting of the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This amendment will appear to now make it\npossible for statutory delegates of the party including former chairmen and\nother national working committee members, as well as members of the party who\nhave previously held certain positions, including President and Vice President,\nformer governors and deputies, presiding and deputy presiding officers of\nlegislative houses who have remained members of the party, to vote at\ncongresses, conventions and meetings of the party. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not appear that this amendment is controversial as it passed easily during the Senate\u2019s plenary session on 10<sup>th<\/sup> May 2022.  It is expected that the House of Representatives will follow suit to concur with the bill.
