{"id":2029,"date":"2021-04-14T09:38:39","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T09:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/?p=2029"},"modified":"2021-04-14T09:38:42","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T09:38:42","slug":"plac-calls-for-expedited-action-on-priority-bills-as-national-assembly-resumes-from-easter-recess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/plac-calls-for-expedited-action-on-priority-bills-as-national-assembly-resumes-from-easter-recess\/","title":{"rendered":"PLAC Calls for Expedited Action on Priority Bills As National Assembly Resumes From Easter Recess"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) in a statement on Tuesday, April 13, called on the National Assembly to prioritise the passage of key bills including the Electoral Bill (which will repeal and re-enact the 2010 Electoral Act), the Petroleum Bill and Constitution Alteration Bills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quick and early considerations and\npassage of these bills will help address several pending and urgently needed\nactions to address agitations from aggrieved citizens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Constitution amendment process which\ngained traction in the National Assembly before the Easter holidays is expected\nto continue as the Ad hoc Committees of the two Houses of the National Assembly\ncontinue to work on the proposals before them and progress the work further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PLAC urges the National Assembly not to\nrelent in its efforts and to quickly consider the proposals and recommendations\nfrom the members of the public on amendments to the Constitution before it and\nhold a Public Hearing where citizens can make further input into the work of\nthe Committee. In this regard, it is expected that issues relating to Local\nGovernment Autonomy and provisions guaranteeing increased political\nrepresentation of women, among others, are going to be critical topics for\nconsideration by the Committees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the Electoral Bill is another\ncritical reform bill that is before the National Assembly, which has reached a\ncritical stage that requires concerted effort by the two Houses to complete in\ngood time for the President to give assent and the independent National\nElectoral Commission (INEC) to incorporate provisions of the legislation into\nits preparations ahead of the 2023 General elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is anticipated that the National Assembly\nwould keep to its promise to pass Constitution Alteration and Electoral Bills\nin the Second quarter of the year, latest by June 2021 as promised by the\nleadership of the National Assembly.
