With\u00a0a few\u00a0days\u00a0left\u00a0to\u00a0the October 10\u00a0governorship\u00a0election in Ondo State,\u00a0concerns are intensifying about\u00a0violent\u00a0clashes among supporters of political parties contesting the election. Two of the main parties in the State, the ruling\u00a0All Progressives Congress\u00a0(APC)\u00a0and the\u00a0Peoples\u00a0Democratic Party (PDP)\u00a0are most cited in the clashes. The most recent reported incident\u00a0was\u00a0on Sunday, October 4, where clashes between supporters of the two main parties led to citizens scampering to safety away from the\u00a0violence\u00a0which was\u00a0characterised\u00a0by sporadic shooting, with some reportedly injured.\u00a0The incident\u00a0took place in Akure, the State capital\u00a0and\u00a0was said to be\u00a0retaliation\u00a0for an attack\u00a0on a supporter of one of the parties\u00a0that took place\u00a0the previous day.\u00a0Again, the campaign\u00a0organisations\u00a0of the two parties have traded blame over the incident.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In recent weeks, the APC and PDP have exchanged accusations and counter accusations over pockets of violent incidents that have occurred in the process of their campaign activities, including the destruction of the parties\u2019 campaign materials. It would seem that the trepidation that preceded the Edo State governorship election occasioned by threats of violence by candidates, their parties and supporters is now trailing the Ondo State election. Observers lauded election stakeholders for a free and fair election, largely devoid of violence in Edo State, and expressed anticipation for an even better exercise in Ondo State.
