After a controversial general election marred by allegations of irregularities and failure, results for the National Assembly elections held February 25, 2023 are almost complete. At a ceremony held on Tuesday, March 7 in Abuja, the Independent National Electoral  Commission (INEC) presented Certificates of Return to 101 Senators whom it declared winners from the February 25 National Assembly elections. According to INEC, several supplementary elections will still be conducted, while a fresh election will be conducted in the Enugu East Senatorial District, where election had been countermanded as a result of the death of the candidate of the Labour Party, Oyibo Chukwu. Certificates of Return for Members elected to the House of Representatives were presented to them on Wednesday, March 8.

With results announced at this time, the current National Assembly has suffered about 70% attrition rate, with just about 30% of current National Assembly members returning to the 10th Assembly which will be inaugurated early June 2023. No State managed to return 100% of its members. Five States returned two of their current Senators. These States are: Abia, Adamawa, Kano, Kwara and Yobe. In the House of Representatives, 26 States have two or more returning members, with Lagos State leading with nine out of 24 members,  followed by Borno State which recorded seven returning members out of 10 members.

The 101 Senators-elect announced so far are spread across seven political parties, with  one fresh election and seven supplementary elections still outstanding. In the House of Representatives, 326 Members-elect have been announced cutting across eight political parties.  Thirty-two supplementary elections are outstanding, and a declaration for one Constituency (Doguwa/Tudun Wada) was removed from the list on account of what INEC described as “Declaration made under duress.”  Another Constituency (Akoko South East/Akoko South West) declaration is currently on hold pending resolution of court disputation.

A complete list of persons elected to the Senate and House of Representatives will likely emerge ahead of the inauguration of the 10th Assembly at the end of the first week of June, as INEC is still conducting supplementary and other elections to fill undeclared seats.
