The Supreme Court was billed to deliver judgments on appeals against the elections of the Governors of six States, namely; Benue, Bauchi, Imo, Kano, Plateau and Sokoto States on Monday, 13th January 2020. However, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Mohammed suspended proceedings, stating that a member of the 7-man panel was indisposed. The Court adjourned sitting to Tuesday, 14th January 2020.

There has been tension in some of the affected States in anticipation of the Court judgements. On Sunday, 12th January 2020, the Sokoto State Police Command stated that it had deployed 1,000 officers and men across the State ahead of the delivery of the Court judgement in the appeal between the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the election, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto and the State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who won the 2019 governorship election by a margin of 342 votes after a supplementary election.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 8th January 2020 upheld the election of the Governors of four States, namely; Abia, Delta, Niger, and Taraba. The Court held that the appellants in each of the appeals failed to substantiate claims of electoral malpractices against the election of each of the State Governors.
