Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) in collaboration with the Senate Committee on Constitution Review convened a 2-day retreat for the secretariat and consultants of the committee with the support of the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The retreat which held at the Abuja Continental Hotel from the 6th of February to the 9th of February 2025, allowed the consultants scrutinize and provide expert recommendations which will be instrumental in guiding the Senate Committee on Constitution Review deliberations and adoption of the Constitution alteration bills.
Following the retreat during which the consultants worked in specialized sub-committees bases on thematic areas, the Judiciary Sub-Committee was assigned the responsibility of reviewing proposed amendments related to judicial reforms. Recognizing the need for broader stakeholder engagement, the sub-committee convened a follow-up consultative meeting with key judicial stakeholders to refine proposals and incorporate expert insights.
The meeting was a convening of consultants of the judiciary sub-committee, representatives from the Federal Ministry of Justice, National Judicial Council (NJC), Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN), Association of Area Court Judges (AACJ), and the Association of Judges of the Customary Courts in Nigeria (AJUCCON) seeking to engage the NJC on areas of disagreement regarding proposed judicial amendments and further clarify the legal and constitutional implications of the proposed reforms.
