The Senate on Wednesday, 17 April, 2019 passed a reworked Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) and Electoral Act Amendment Bill at plenary.

It will be recalled that President Buhari had vetoed the PIGB and refused assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill for a record four times after citing constitutional and other constraints. However, the Senate resolved to rework the Bills in line with the President’s observation before transmitting same for assent.

The Senate also passed 6 Constitutional alteration Bills bordering on Legislative immunity, the Nigeria Police Force, the time frame for presenting an Appropriation Bill, strengthening the judiciary, reflecting the establishment and core functions of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) and providing for the alteration of the Constitution if the President withholds assent.

The passage of the 6 Constitution alteration Bills followed its adoption of recommendations of a Technical Committee that was set up to examine Bills that had been rejected by President Buhari.
