The Senate has called for a National Summit on Security following the killing of Mrs Foluke Olakunrin, (daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, leader of the Yoruba socio-political Afenifere Group) and fresh concerns on the incessant security challenges across the country. Although a date is yet to be scheduled for the summit, its planned outcome as well as what it intends to achieve from the recommendation(s) from the meeting are questionable.
It will be recalled that the 8th Senate held a two-day Summit in February 2018 to review the security architecture of the country. However, the extensive recommendations generated from the summit and presented by the then Senate Ad hoc Committee on the Review of the Current Security Infrastructure in Nigeria was never implemented despite being adopted and consequently transmitted to President Buhari.
Incidentally, Senate President, Ahmed Lawan who is calling for the summit by the 9th Assembly chaired the said Ad-hoc Committee in the 8th Assembly, in his capacity then as Majority Leader of the Senate.
