Senator Babajide Omoworare has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate). Prior to his appointment on Wednesday, 21st August 2019, Senator Ita Enang occupied the position in the President’s first term.

In the 8th Assembly, Senator Omoworare who is also a lawyer chaired important Committees such as the Committee on Rules and Business (November 2015 to December 2016) and the Committee on Legislative Compliance. It is well known that the Committee on Rules and Business is considered as one of the most important Committees in the National Assembly as it plays an important role in scheduling the business of the day (through the Notice Paper and Order paper) and records the events and decisions of each sitting in the Votes and Proceedings. The Committee on Legislative Compliance is responsible for implementing the Senate’s resolutions.

Some of the roles the new Senior Special Assistant is expected to undertake include advancing the current administration’s legislative agenda, promoting its policy priorities in Senate and ensure a productive working relationship between the Executive and the Legislature.

The new SSA was a prominent legislator in the 8th Senate having sponsored some key Bills such as the Prisons and Correctional Services Bill, 2017, the Bill seeking to establish a National Assembly Budget and Research Office (to provide the National Assembly with objective, timely and non-partisan analysis on economic and budget matters) and several Constitution alteration Bills.
