PLAC’s Technical Session on the Administrative Implications of the Special Seats Bill

On Tuesday, 5^th October, PLAC held a technical session to assess the administrative implications of the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to create women-only seats in the federal and state legislative houses. The session was supported by the German Federal Foreign Office/ifa-zivik. The discussions were centred majorly around Timelines and Party Nominations, Voting Operations and Constituency Demarcation, and Guidelines and Regulations of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC). These were geared towards gaining understanding of the practical aspects of implementing this Constitutional amendment, if passed into law.  In addition, these are also with a view to informing the perspectives of civil society advocacy on the bill. At this time, the bill providing for additional seats for women in the National Assembly has passed second reading and is in the aggregation of bills to be considered by the ad hoc Committees on Constitution Review of the Senate and House of Representatives.
