This factsheet shows the ranking of countries by the percentage of women in unicameral or lower chambers of parliaments, and the percentage of women in the upper chambers of parliaments in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to data from the Inter Parliamentary Union, Nigeria ranks 179 out of 184, with only 3.9% of women in the House of Representatives and 3.7% of women in the Nigerian Senate.

Most African countries that have achieved a high level of women’s representation have done so through the use of special measures such as quotas. About 41 out of 54 African countries adopt constitutional, legislated or voluntary party quotas to elect women to parliaments.
