On Wednesday, 9 April, 2025, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) formally launched a report titled: “From Ballot to the Courts: Analysis of Election Petition Litigation from Nigeria’s 2023 General Elections.”
The report provides in-depth analysis of court judgments on election petitions that followed the results of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. It reviews the decisions of the tribunals and courts against the legal framework for elections, such as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Electoral Act, of 2022. It contains findings on issues, trends, and challenges arising from the resolution of petitions and makes recommendations thereto.
This comprehensive report is a must-read and is available here: From Ballot to the Courts
An abridged version of the report is available here: From Ballot to the Courts (abridged version)
In addition, PLAC unveiled its Election Petitions Case Directory, an accompanying online case directory that contains summaries and judgment on over 1500 post-election cases from the 2023 general elections. This unique database targets lawyers, scholars, activists, and citizens interested in learning more about the election petitions process and its outcomes.

Also tied to the report and case directory is PLAC’s Electoral Act App which is a resource containing the complete text of the Nigerian Electoral Act passed in 2022. It contains simplified explanations for every section of the law, as well as relevant and recent court decisions that interpret the provisions. This app was originally launched in 2023 but has now been updated with recent case law.
