PLAC Event: Retreat of Joint Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives on Climate Change

A retreat of the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives held on 23rd and 24th July 2024 in Abuja, with support from Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Climate Change and Ecology, Senator Seriake Dickson and the Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change in the House, Hon. Chris Nkwonta, as well as members of the two Committees were in attendance. Also in attendance were the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Climate Change Finance, the SSA to the President on Climate Technology and a representative of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Presentations delivered at the meeting include: An Overview of the Science of Climate Change and Its Impact on Nigeria’s Economy; Gaps in Existing Laws and Best Practices for Drafting and Implementing Effective Climate Laws; Climate Finance and Building Local resilience through Inclusive Decision Making. These provided key information that formed the basis of the conversations at the meeting.

The meeting was a platform to discuss the role of national policies and legislation in achieving climate goals and strengthening Nigeria’s response to global issue of climate change. The Committees emphasized the need to have consultations at State level, to inform interventions to achieve Nigeria’s climate change goals.
