CSOs-and-the-Nigerian-Civic-Space-in-2021

This report produced by Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) with support from the Ford Foundation, explores the operational climate of civil society organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria during the year under review. It particularly documents the challenge of rising insecurity, the spill over of the EndSARS protests, which included the harassment of key emerging protagonists and institutions in Nigeria’s activist space, the rise of separatist agitations, regulation of CSO operations in a declining economy and the censorship of the digital media which got to its zenith with the controversies surrounding the Twitter ban. The report also explores major achievements within the year, including how CSOs have been working to assuage the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, alleviate poverty, demand transparency and accountability from government, advocating for an improved electoral process, disability rights, among others. In addition, it addresses the operational challenges of CSOs in Nigeria today.
