In an election that witnessed one of Nigeria’s worst voter turnouts, a record 3.29%, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, Chimaobi Iheanyichukwu Ebisike defeated five other candidates to emerge winner of the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency bye-election on Saturday, March 27. The election was held to fill the seat made vacant by the death of Hon. Ossy Prestige earlier this year. Chimaobi Iheanyichukwu Ebisike of the PDP was declared winner, having scored a total of 10,322 votes to beat his closest rival, Mascot Orji Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 3,674 votes. With 16,335 voters accredited for the election out of a total of 496,628 registered voters in the area, INEC recorded a 3.29% turnout for the election. This is abysmally low and is indicative of growing voter apathy in the country, a trend that urgently needs to be reversed in upcoming bye and supplementary elections, ahead of major off-cycle elections and the 2023 general elections.
