The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections for September 19  and October 10, 2020, respectively. The current tenure of the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki will be coming to an end on 12th November 2020, while the tenure of his Ondo State counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu will end on 24th February 2021. Section 25(8) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) provides that an election to the office of Governor is to hold not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the term of office of an incumbent Governor. According to INEC’s timetable of  activities leading up to the elections, political parties that seek to field candidates for the elections are expected to conduct party primaries between June 2 and June 27 for the Edo State election, and between July 2 and July 25 for the election in Ondo State.
