The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), early Wednesday morning declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the Nigeria 2023 Presidential election. According to INEC, Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes, followed by the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Atiku Abubakar who polled 6,984,520 votes. The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi scored 6,101,533 votes. The Presidential election has been characterised by controversy with Nigerian and international observers calling the election out as lacking credibility. The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room questioned the credibility of the election and at a press conference, called on INEC to explain how its processes led up to the results declared. The main opposition parties – PDP, LP and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have accused INEC of rigging the elections and called for cancellation of the polls and holding of fresh elections. INEC has issued certificate of return to Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Controversy surrounding the election creates severe legitimacy problems for the INEC-declared winner.
