The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a 14-day display of the Preliminary Register of Voters for claims and objections. The exercise is expected to run for a period of 14 days, from Saturday, 12th November 2022 to Friday, 25th November 2022, between 9:00 am to 3:00 pm each day. In the first seven days, the exercise will take place at the Registration Area (Ward) level while for the remaining seven days, it will take place at the Local Government/Area Council offices of INEC. For the first time, the Preliminary Register of Voters has been made available online. This is in line with the provision of section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022. The display of the Preliminary Register of Voters will afford citizens an opportunity to scrutinise the Register with a view to identifying errors in their personal information, names of underaged persons, deceased persons, non-Nigerian citizens and persons who do not live or work in the location where their names appear.
It will be recalled that INEC conducted the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise from June 2021 till July 2022. Following the exercise, the Commission announced that 12,298,944 persons successfully completed registration. However, it
declared the registration of 2,780,756 persons invalid, and consequently deleted them for reasons such as double/multiple registrations, fake registrations and registration by underaged persons. This left the number of valid registrations at 9,518,188. Claims and objections from the on-going display of the Preliminary register of Voters may see a further reduction in the number of eligible voters.
