PLAC Event: Capacity Development Workshop for Clerks of the House of Representatives

Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) organised a Capacity Development workshop on Effective Work Planning for clerks of the 10th House of Representatives, with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The workshop held in two batches –  on 13th and 14 October for the first batch, and  20th and 21st October for the second batch.

At the workshop, Executive Director of PLAC, Clement Nwankwo delivered the welcome remarks and underscored the importance of the National Assembly to Nigeria’s democracy and the key roles that clerks play in strengthening the institution.

The workshop featured various sessions facilitated by seasoned professionals. Some of these sessions include a presentation on ‘Reporting Committee Procedure’ delivered by a former Clerk of the National Assembly, Niyi Ajiboye; ‘The Fundamentals of Effective Report Writing and Minutes Taking’ delivered by the Deputy Director of the Legal Drafting Department of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Godwin Iheabunike. Others include ‘General Management of Committee Activities’ by Dr. Rahila Ahmadu; ‘Developing Workplan for Effective Committee Work’ by Dr. Aminu Umar of the National Open University; ‘Effective Engagement with Stakeholders for Committee Programming and Public Hearing’ by National Team Leader, PERL/ECP, among other sessions.

The clerks also had breakout sessions where they engaged in deep dive discussions on issues such as the current realities of the National Assmebly Committees and recommended ways to improve communications and co-ordination.
