PLAC Production: Brief History of Organised Civil Society in Nigeria (Part 2)

The second part of this documentary features civic and activist movements in the era of Nigeria’s military dictatorship and in the Fourth Republic/post 1999. In the military dictatorship era, groups of activists, student bodies, trade unions and professional bodies primarily fought to end military rule and actualise return to democratic governance. Some of these groups came together to form a coalition – National Consultative Forum (NCF), which transitioned into Campaign for Democracy. It also features the establishment of other groups such as the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Movement for National Reformation (MNR), Environmental Rights Action in the early 90s, which advocated for ethnic minority rights and highlighted environmental rights issues. This documentary also spotlights the formation of the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) in 1998, which observed the 1999 transition elections to civilian rule, and the expansion of the scope of civil society organisations in a democratic dispensation.
