The Anambra State 2021 governorship election is gaining momentum as political parties are electing candidates to field for the election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had slated political party primaries to run from June 20 to July 1 in its timetable and schedule of activities for the election. On Wednesday, June 23, the ruling party in Anambra State, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), held its primaries with a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Charles Chukwuma Soludo emerging as candidate for the party, defeating three other aspirants who contested on the platform of the party. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held its primaries on Saturday, June 26 from which Valentine Ozigbo was said to have emerged winner of the exercise. However, separate primaries by a faction of the party in the State produced Ugochukwu Uba as candidate. In a rather controversial development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was said to have conducted primaries on Saturday, June 26. While some governorship aspirants on the platform of the party and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige have alleged that no primaries held, news reports state that a former Senator, Andy Uba received 230,201 votes and elected as the party’s flagbearer, defeating his closest rival, who scored 28,746 votes and 12 other aspirants on the platform of the party.
The Anambra State governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, November 6.
